Aaron Walton,
Perched at the top of Nelson’s Port Hills, this home enjoys an expansive 180-degree view stretching from Tāhunanui Beach to Port Nelson, with the stunning Tasman Bay beyond. The site offered an incredible opportunity to create something truly special—while also presenting significant challenges due to its tight footprint and steep northern slope.
Designed as a four-bedroom, two-bathroom family home, the project required thoughtful planning to fully capture the panoramic outlook from every room. The home's layout was carefully crafted to embrace the natural surroundings. Upon entry, the view immediately opens up through large sliding doors in the main living space, drawing your attention toward the bay. The centrally located kitchen acts as the heart of the home—ideal for entertaining—while bedrooms extend off the living area to create both connection and privacy. The main bedroom, positioned above the garage, offers a peaceful retreat with elevated views.
Despite the site's constraints, we even found space for a family swimming pool and a covered pergola—perfect for summer fun and outdoor relaxation.
This project is a testament to how a considered design approach can transform a constrained, sloping site into a functional and elegant modern home. Seamlessly integrated with its environment, the home delivers a unique living experience and a breathtaking connection to Tasman Bay.
